AUSCHWITZ
The History of the Most Notorious Nazi Extermination Camp
" Death, death, death. Death in the morning, death in the night,
death in the afternoon. Death. We lived with death.
How could a human feel? "
Pawel Stemin. Polish prisoner. Auschwitz
Introduction
Extermination camps were built during the 2nd World War to systematically kill millions of primarily Jewish people. Non-Jewish people were also killed in these death camps, including many Polish and Soviet prisoners of war. This genocide of the Jewish people was the "Final solution to the Jewish question” of Third Reich. The Nazi attempts at Jewish genocide are known as The Holocaust.
Nisko Plan
The Nisko Plan, or Nisko-Lublin Plan was introduced by the Nazi German SS unit (Schutzstaffel) in September 1939 as a "territorial solution to the Jewish Question". The Nisko Plan was implemented immediately between October 1939 and April 1940 by setting up a concentration camp as known as Lublin reservation in the General government of Poland. The plan and the reservation were named after the towns of Lublin and Nisko which bordered the reservation. Nisko plan was the first step of many which eventually led millions of Jews to gas chambers.
